EHS Manager

EHS - Fairfield, CA - Full Time

COMPANY OVERVIEW

The Primal Pet Group includes manufacturers of fully prepared, human-grade raw foods, treats, and supplements for dogs and cats. SUMMARY

This position will handle the development, implementation and monitoring of environmental, safety, and health policies and procedures and best practices, particularly related to product manufacturing. This position will require constant presence on the production floor and within the warehouse to ensure the best safety practices are being followed at all times. The EHS Manager will also create, maintain, and enforce Safety Training for all facility personnel. Additionally, this role will work closely with the Operations Team in creating and maintaining a positive and safe workplace.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental

  • Approves chemical use, and maintains the Chemical Inventory, and SDS sheets as required by State and Federal laws.
  • Partners with QA, Maintenance and Production Departments to ensure proper disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Maintains Local, State and/or Federal required Haz Com Environmental Compliance Programs

Health

  • Partner with the QA/ Food Safety Manager to enforce Facility GMPs with employees and visitors.
  • Implement and oversee a “first responders” team for any accidents that occur within the facility.
  • Maintain First Aid/ CPR certifications and become a trainer for these certifications.
  • Performs Ergonomic assessments, institutes corrective measures and assists employees with concerns.
  • Oversee the COVID-19 Prevention Program according to CA OSHA and collaborates with HR on implementation.

Safety

  • Conduct regular safety inspections, walkthroughs, and audits throughout the three Fairfield Facilities
  • Identifies facility/job site hazards and risks to mitigate hazards and prevent injuries, fires, and spills.
  • Ensure compliance with company and customer-specific safety standards and government regulations.
  • Coordinate the Fire Prevention Plan establish Emergency Evacuation Plans and conduct Fire Drills
  • Establish, train, and maintain a First Responder team in the Production Plant
  • Recommend ways to assist the company in creating safer and cleaner processes and continuous improvement.
  • Perform investigations for all safety incidents, mitigate the hazard, document, and complete reporting requirements.
  • Assists with Worker’s Compensation claims and the return-to-work policy
  • Establishes, aligns, and supports the Safety Committee. Acts as interim chain and conducts all Safety Committee meetings until a comprehensive behavior-based safety program is established.
  • Conducts monthly OSHA safety training, coordinates biweekly Safety Toolbox Training, and maintains records.
  • Establish a radiation training program for x-ray machines and line operators.
  • Maintains Train the Trainer PIT equipment certification in order to train and certify new operators.
  • Perform Scissor Lift and Fall Protection Training for all employees required to operate this equipment.
  • Maintain the Hearing Conservation Program, conduct noise monitoring, and coordinate audiometric testing.
  • Maintain the CCTV system through collaborative actions with managers and supervisors and institute loss prevention, loss control, and corrective actions for unsafe acts, conditions, and equipment.
  • Partner with Operations team(s) to develop and distribute communications addressing accidents, near misses, lessons learned, and other EHS-related topics.

Overall EHS

  • Assist departments with coordination, development, and delivery of EHS training and education programs for new hires and existing employees either by use of CBT (Alchemy) or in-person training.
  • Assists with employee issues in cooperation with the HR Manager
  • Assists with internal audits as needed.
  • Compiles and reports Human Resources and Environmental, Health and Safety data.
  • Use initiative to independently perform recurring EHS Tasks
  • Other Duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists with enforcement oversight of plant and warehouse personnel to ensure continued adherence and compliance to State, Federal, and Company EHS regulations. No direct staff supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

5 or more years’ experience working as a safety professional in an industrial or manufacturing environment, preferably in a food manufacturing plant.

SKILLS

  • Able to multi-task and work with multiple interruptions
  • Must be able to deal with confidential materials and information professionally and tactfully.
  • Perform investigations, interview employees, and document detailed incident reports.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent written communication skills and solid presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize and follow-through to achieve results and meet deadlines to meet the needs of the business.
  • Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate across all levels of the organization.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, speak, and communicate in English across all levels of the organization. Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly preferred
